China Pacific Insurance shares closes up 1.07% on first trading dayPublished: 23 Dec 2009 02:02:01 PST

Shares of China Pacific Insurance, the country's third-largest life insurer, closed up 1.07 percent to close at HK$28.3 ($3.65) on its first trading day on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The company's IPO price was HK$28 and the shares opened flat in the morning.

"Pacific Insurance's valuation is attractive to some extent," said Nan Sheng, a Shanghai-based analyst at UOB Kayhian Investment "Most brokerages are recommending insurance stocks for next year because rising interest rates will benefit their investment returns."

The firm raised $3.1 billion in the world's seventh-largest IPO this year.

Sep. 17, 2009 (China Knowledge) - U.S.-based investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc recently assigned a "buy" rating for Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd<0016>, raising the stock's target price by 1.7% to HK$120.

The brokerage said that Sun Hung Kai Properties' first-half results were within the range it forecast, and that the property developer's rental income beat its forecast.

Goldman Sachs also noted that Sun Hung Kai Properties' property brands have gained recognition in mainland China.

Sun Hung Kai Properties Tuesday said its net profit for the 12 months ended Jun. 30 decreased 62% from HK$ 27.60 billion a year ago to HK$10.36 billion, due to a loss from the revaluation of investment property.

Its underlying profit, excluding the effect of fair value changes on investment properties, rose 1.9% from a year earlier to HK$12.42 billion for the fiscal year on strong sales and rental income, the company said in a statement.

Hong Kong's biggest developer by market value said it is optimistic about Hong Kong's residential market and aims to sell 3,500 units, or HK$23 billion of residential properties, in the next fiscal year. It has already sold 850 units, or HK$3.7 billion of properties.

Recent regulatory approval for investment-linked insurance (ILI) products was most likely encouraged by the improvement of China’s stock market, according to analysts.

China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) issued approval Tuesday for four life insurance companies to establish ILI accounts. It was the first approval of such accounts since February 2008.

ILI provides customers with insurance protection and flexibility in investment via mutual funds that can be further invested on the stock market or in treasuries or bonds.

It would be more risky to consumers if the government relaxed controls on ILI products during a market downturn, Song Chuang, business development director with Soderberg & Partners, a wealth management and insurance consulting firm, told the Global Times yesterday.

Selling insurance products often involves risk, especially for ILI products, Song said.

Insurance salespeople tend to exaggerate the returns of these products in order to make commission even if the market is down, he noted.

The performance of the stock market probably explains why the government suspended approval for ILI accounts over the past year and why it has recently approved new products, Song said.
The CIRC banned sales of ILI products at bank counters designed for everyday transactions from March 15, to curb misguidance that had led to consumer complaints.

Many customers terminated their ILI contracts last year in response to declining returns as a result of the tumbling stock market.

The Shanghai composite index was above 4,300 points in January 2008 and plunged to 1,820 points by end of last year.

The Shanghai composite index has gained for six straight months since January, up 69 percent yesterday from December 31 and breaking through the 3,100 mark Monday.

“The rebounding capital market, especially the stock market is a good sign from the perspective of risk control. The government approved ILI capital entering the market because it is bullish at the moment,” Song said.

Funds entering the market from ILI accounts will have little effect on the overall A-share market that has a total capital of 12 trillion yuan ($1.76 trillion), Hu Lifeng, an analyst at China Galaxy Securities, told the Global Times.

Total mutual funds invested in A shares is 2.3 trillion yuan ($336.75 billion) with the proportion of ILI funds below 5 percent, Hu said.

The new ILI accounts approved by CIRC were for Great Wall Life Insurance, China Life Insurance, Prudential CITIC Life Insurance and CPIC-ING Life Insurance. Great Wall Life had no previous ILI accounts, while the other three companies had such accounts before.

As of yesterday, none of the four insurers had started new ILI business.

Suning Appliance said Friday that shareholders at the troubled Japanese electronics chain Laox have approved a plan to sell its shares to Suning. The deal also got the nod from the Japanese government.

Last month, Suning said it would pay 800 million yen ($8.4m) for 27.36 percent of Laox, to become the biggest shareholder.

It’s the first time that a Chinese mainland firm has bought a stake in a listed Japanese company. Suning hopes to return the flagging Laox to profitability within 18 months.

GREEN WHEELS: Zotye Auto, a Hangzhou-based private auto producer, displayed its electric vehicle at the Shanghai International Motor Show in April.

April 20 marked the 20th Earth Day as well as the opening of the annual Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, where electric vehicles were the highlight. Fifteen foreign and domestic auto manufacturers displayed their latest offerings, of which 10 were from China.

Amid the global economic recession, green power has been considered a viable alternative to high gas prices and the continued impact of global warming caused in part by auto emissions. A fad for electric vehicles has been developing since last August, when Beijing put 500 green energy autos into service to realize the ideal of hosting a green Olympics.

Local governments, auto-related enterprises, scholars and institutions are all striving to be a part of this auto trend under the banner of "going green." But despite their enthusiasm, China still lacks a standard commercial electric vehicle.

Politically correct

As the world's fourth largest auto producer and third largest auto consumer, China had 65 million cars on the road at the end of 2008, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. By 2020, the country will have more than 150 million autos that consume 250 million tons of gas annually, posing a severe threat to its energy security, said Ouyang Minggao, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Safety and Energy Director at Tsinghua University New Energy Vehicle Center.

Greenhouse-gas auto emissions are also a problem that China cannot afford to neglect. Auto emission pollution in China's big cities accounts for 65 percent of their total pollutants, Ouyang said at the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Forum in Beijing on April 10.

Unlike internal combustion engines that operate with a particular fuel such as gasoline or diesel, electric vehicles use electricity which produces zero emissions. New energy autos include hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and electric vehicles, according to the National Administrative Regulations on New Energy Auto Industry Admittance issued in November 2007.

The future of electric vehicles has outshined the other two. HEV operates on two systems, including internal combustion engines (ICEs) and batteries. China has no evident advantages in ICE, so HEV does not offer a viable choice for the country to take the lead in the auto industry. FCV, mainly powered by hydrogen, faces difficulties because of the high cost of producing hydrogen.

With the development of nuclear and wind power plants, China now has a higher electricity oversupply at night. Because owners of electric vehicles must recharge their vehicles at night, the electric cars will help balance the huge difference in the amount of electricity used during daylight and at night.

By the end of 2007, China's installed electricity generation capacity was 700 million kw, which at its peak volume could supply enough energy to recharge 30-40 million electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries, said Chen Liquan, a researcher at the Laboratory of Solid State Ionics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The idea that green energy autos, or more specifically, electric vehicles, will save China from global warming has become something of an article of faith among policymakers. To vibrantly push forward the development of new energy autos is in accordance with China's situation and the new direction of the world auto industry, Miao Wei, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technologies, said at the forum.

Dec. 16, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong stocks fell on Wednesday. The Hang Seng Index, the benchmark, opened 26.33 points higher at 21,840.25. After touching the intraday low of 21,517.59 points, the blue-chip Hang Seng Index fell 202.18 points or 0.93% to close at 21,611.74.

Mainboard turnover rose to HK$62.51 billion.

The Hang Seng China Enterprise Index, which tracks the overall performance of 43 Chinese mainland state-owned enterprises on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, slid 175.56 points or 1.36% to 12,691.43 points.

Market heavyweight HSBC Holdings Plc<0005><HBC>, which accounts for the largest weighting for the Hang Seng Index, dipped 0.39% to HK$89.1.

Pearl Oriental Innovation Ltd<0632> surged 11.3% to HK$1.28. Silver Base Group Holdings Ltd<0886> declined 12.94% to HK$2.69.

Bank stocks ended lower. Bank of China<601988><3988> fell 0.96% to HK$4.12. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China<601398><1398> decreased 1.1% to HK$6.31. China Construction Bank<601939><0939> slipped 1.94% to HK$6.57. China Merchants Bank<600036><3968> dipped 1.23% to HK$20.1.

Stocks of gold firms were weak. Zijin Mining Group Co Ltd<601899><2899> decreased 1.84% to HK$8.02. Zhaojin Mining Industry Co Ltd<1818> dipped 0.49% to HK$16.2. Lingbao Gold Co Ltd<3330> dipped 0.32% to HK$3.07. Sino Gold Mining Ltd<1862> ended flat at HK$57.6.

Hong Kong's retail sales declined 12.6% in FebPublished: 05 Apr 2009 23:43:06 PST

Apr. 6, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong saw its retail sales decline 12.6% year on year to HK$19.9 billion in February due to the consumption expenditure shrinkage caused by the global economic recession, according to the statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department on Apr. 2.

The decrease rate is far beyond the previous prediction of 1.5% made by ten economists interviewed by Dow Jones Newswires.

Discounting the effect of price changes, sales volume in February fell 13.8% year on year after rising 5.4% in January. The auto industry experienced the sharpest plunge, falling 35.6%.

The sharp year on year drop is largely a result of the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday, which fell in February in 2009 but usually falls in January.

Apr. 13, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China's coal imports in March surged 37.4% from a year earlier to 5.72 million tons, and the growth was 11.9% higher from that in February, according to the statistics released by the country's General Administration of Customs on Friday.

The increase was mainly caused by resurgent domestic demand and relatively lower imported coal price compared with the domestically-produced coal.

In February, Chinese coal imports surged 73% year on year to 4.88 million tons, the highest volume recorded in the last 22 months, or an increase of 63% from January, according to an earlier report from China Knowledge.

China power generation, a key indicator of the economic health, recorded a slightly year-on-year decline of 0.71% in March, compared with the 3.7% drop in the first month of this year.

Dec. 14, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Haier Group, the fourth largest white goods manufacturer in the world, held opening ceremonies for its three new high-end exhibition halls in Tehran, Iran on Sunday, which marks that Haier's full production line is available in the Middle East country.

Haier is working closely with its local partners to brand and market Haier products in Iran, as well as to establish an effective after-sales service network said Zhang Qingfu, chief marketing director of Haier Mid-East and Africa region.

Haier has started selling washing machines in Iran since the 1990s, and has gained recognition from Iranian customers. Haier has also mapped out a strategic plan to intensify its overseas marketing campaign to deal with the ongoing financial crisis.

The Chinese company also held the Haier Iran Dealers Meeting in Tehran on the same day.

Shanghai, August 18 (Gasgoo.com) China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co, the surprise leading bidder for the General Motors' Hummer brand, is preparing to establish a separate sales division in Shanghai for marketing of imported Hummer vehicles, according to a report compiled by Chinese Internet portal Netease.com.

The report said Tengzhong had poached Huang Zhiqiang, vice president of Chery Auto's international business department, to head the upcoming Hummer division in Shanghai, which is not yet registered.

Sep. 9, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong-listed property developer Century City International Holdings Ltd<0355> said that its un-audited consolidated profit attributable to shareholders dropped to HK$123.3 million in the first half of this year, down 41.37% from HK$210.3 million a year earlier, sources reported.

The company attributed the profit decline mainly to the decreased profit contributed by Regal Hotels International Holdings Ltd<0078>.

Earnings per share were 5.34 HK cents. A dividend of 0.3 HK cent was declared, according to the company's interim results.

During the first six months of this year, the company's revenue was HK$115.1 million, down from HK$133.3 million in the corresponding period of last year.

Century City has attached great importance to the firm's planned diversification of business and asset base, and it will continue to seek development opportunities, according to the statement. However, Century City will prudently carry out the diversification plans due to the uncertainty market conditions.

Century City now owns beneficially about 57.7% of Paliburg Holdings Ltd<0617>. Paliburg owns an effective controlling shareholding interest of around 47.2% in Regal which, in turn, owns approximately 74.0% of the issued units of Regal REIT.

Shares of Century City rose 1.19% to close at HK$0.425 on Tuesday.
