Welcome to ICAN of New Jersey! The International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc. (ICAN), is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). ICAN was founded by Esther Booth Zorn in 1982.
40.0% of all births in NJ in 2009 were via cesarean section which is major surgery. The World Health Organization has stated that a cesarean section rate should be about 10-15%. Above that, we are putting the lives and women and their babies at risk.
It is time to make the women of NJ aware of this crisis and demand better maternity care. It is time for hospitals to publicize their cesarean rates, VBAC rates, epidural and episiotomy rates. Women have a right to know this in order to make an informed decision
